Because of that, they\u2019re often used to address concerns such as dryness, brittleness and more significant damage. Similar to a targeted skin-care treatment, masks work beneath the surface to improve hair quality over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHeat is a tremendous asset for hair masks, because it helps open the cuticle, allowing the ingredients to penetrate the hair shaft so the benefits last through multiple shampoos,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nunzio_nyc1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nunzio Saviano<\/a>, hairstylist and founder of his namesake hair-care brand. Since masks are designed as treatments, he adds that they work best when used sparingly\u2014\u201canywhere from twice a week to once a month, depending on the condition of the hair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conditioners, on the other hand, are formulated for regular use. \u201cThese products work on the surface to restore moisture, smooth the cuticle and improve manageability after shampooing,\u201d says Brenner. While conditioners may contain some of the same ingredients as hair masks, they\u2019re designed for quick, immediate results. According to Saviano, they don\u2019t deeply condition the hair from the inside out. \u201cMost formulas contain silicones to focus on smoothing and creating instant shine, rather than ingredients meant to address more serious concerns like brittle or damaged hair,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do You Need Both a Hair Mask and Conditioner?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the overlap, it\u2019s easy to assume one can replace the other, but experts say that\u2019s not the case. \u201cConditioners balance and protect your hair regularly, but they can\u2019t do it alone. Masks step in when you need to address deeper needs before damage becomes visible,\u201d says New York\u2013based stylist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thehairdiosa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tatiana Ramos<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incorporating both conditioner and a hair mask into your routine allows you to maintain daily moisture while also supporting deeper repair and hydration, keeping hair healthy long before damage has a chance to show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Use a Hair Mask<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How you use a hair mask depends largely on your hair type, but it helps to think of it as a treatment rather than an everyday step. \u201cIf you\u2019re experiencing dryness or your hair is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeauty.com\/best-products-color-treated-hair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">color-treated<\/a>, once a week\u2014or more often\u2014is ideal,\u201d says Ramos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proper application also matters. To make sure the formula coats strands evenly, hairstylist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hairbypooja\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pooja Shah<\/a> recommends combing the mask through after applying, then letting it sit for the recommended amount of time. While it can be tempting to leave it on for longer, Brenner notes that conditioners work best as part of the wash process. \u201cAfter shampooing, apply the conditioner and rinse thoroughly,\u201d she says.
